Create an effective business with SMART goal setting method
How do you see yourself 10 years from now?
Personal development author Brian Tracy says “All successful people men and women are big dreamers. They imagine what their future could be, ideal in every respect, and then they work every day toward their distant vision, that goal or purpose.”
Having a goal to aim at is important, it keeps us moving in the right direction like a compass.
If you don’t know where to start with setting your goals, use the “SMART” goal setting method.
SMART stands for Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant and Time Bound.
Specific
To be Specific with your goal is to identify the exact things that you want to achieve. Your goals must be clear to you and your team.
For example, “I want to see 15 clients a week” or “I want to launch my website at the end of the month.”
Having specific goals makes it easy to tick off what you have accomplished in your given time frame.
Measurable
Your goal being Measurable means you can track and evaluate your progress in quantities or amounts. You must be able to have a standard by which you know you have accomplished your goal.
A measurable goal also means that you have a good estimation of how much time you need to achieve your goal.
Attainable
Attainable means achievable.
Dreams are unlimited, but when you transform these dreams into reality by setting a goal, you need to be clear about what you want to happen and weigh whether you can actually get it done.
Relevant
Is the goal you’re working on consistent with the vision and mission of your business?
You must also consider timing and how it affects your business. Are there risks? If there are, are these risks worth taking?
What about people? Do you have the right person for the job? A person with impressive skills may not necessarily be the right person to help you accomplish your goals.
Time bound
Some people can linger on goals for years, never knowing when to stop or even if they should stop at all. With SMART goal setting, every goal has a deadline.
Setting a time limit on your goals is an easy way to know when you have accomplished what you have set out to do (or not) which also lets you evaluate whether a plan is worth keeping, rehashing or if it needs the boot.
Plan to grow!
The “not-so-secret” about business is that if you want to be successful in what you do, you need to have a vision and a plan.
Without a plan, you can’t expect your business to grow.
